SCOPE is a vision shared and brought to life by a group of first and second year medical students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. It is an attempt to capture the myriad experiences and emotions that permeate the beauty and rigors of a medical education. More than a mere journal of literary collections, SCOPE is a collage of humor, tragedy and art that reflects the "other" side of our medical community. We are grateful to all contributors, reviewers and the School of Medicine for making this maiden endeavor possible. The unconditional support, insight and advice of Roger Robinson, Dr. Carl Getto, John Record, Dr. Phil Davis and Dr. Jacqueline Scolari were paramount in the successful completion of this project. Editing and compiling the inaugural issue of SCOPE has been a tremendous experience for all of us and it is with utmost pride and pleasure we present the "rookie" edition of SCOPE.
