CLINICAL SKILLS LABORATORY

Clinical Skills Laboratory Models Clinical Skills

In each unit during Year 2, nurse educators work with assigned groups of students on a set of required clinical skills sessions (see below).  Prior to each session the students need to review the corresponding handout (found on D2L under Doctoring).  Students are required to be on time to the session, participate in a discussion of the theory and performance of the skill and return demonstrate the procedure in order to satisfactorily complete the skills session.

Basic Clinical Skills Sessions
  1. Hematology, Immunology & Infection [HII] Unit

  • Orientation to PDL rooms

  • Injections SQ & IM

  • Patient transfer and log rolling

  • Blood Pressure Monitoring

  • Orientation to Inpatient Charts

  1. Circulation (Cardiovascular-Renal-Respiratory) [CRR] Unit

  • IV insertion & removal, IV fluid line set-up, Venipuncture

  • Urinary catheter insertion and removal (male and female)

  1. Neuromuscular and Behavior [NMB] Unit

  • Suture and staple removal

  • Dressing changes

  • Swab specimen collection:  throat, nasopharyngel, wound, rectal and eye

  1. Endocrine, Reproductive, and Gastrointestinal [ERG] Unit

  • N/G insertion and removal
