Master Educator-Succession Planning Subcommittee

At the EPC 2006 retreat a recommendation was made to convene a Master Educator-Succession Planning Subcommittee.  The EPC recognized that a number of Master Teachers will soon retire and determined that such Master Teachers are essential for excellent education at SIU SOM.  The subcommittee will be composed solely of EPC members.

CHARGE:

The subcommittee will convene in September 2006 and will provide quarterly interim reports to the EPC.  The EPC will determine when a final report is due, but expects that the work will be completed in 2007.  The EPC has no expectations regarding the number of times the subcommittee will meet, and will leave that to the discretion of the chair.  The subcommittee will consider all the issues related to meeting the need for Master Teachers in the SIU curriculum.  The EPC has identified the following issues for discussion:

  1. How are Master Teachers recruited or trained (consider MHPE and Master Educator Programs)?
  2. How does the SIU SOM develop the skills of young faculty who show promise as Master Teachers?
  3. How does the SIU SOM establish a broad buy-in for the master teacher curricular process?
  4. How are chairs encouraged to recruit with a clear teaching philosophy and teaching mandate?
  5. How is the Tenure and Promotion Committee encouraged to value teaching and educational scholarship?  How are scholarly activities defined?
  6. Consider all aspects:  How does SIU recruit, hire, grow,  enculture, sustain, and reward faculty members who have special skills and a fire for teaching.

The EPC has suggested that the subcommittee should meet several times, at least once with the Dean, before having longer meetings with the chairs (perhaps a half day retreat), the Tenure & Promotion Committee and perhaps SIU P&S.
