 Mission and Goals of the Year Three Curriculum Committee

Mission:

  • The Year Three Curriculum Committee is responsible for the coordination, oversight, and refinement of the third year curriculum.

Goals:

  • Provide a broad-based curriculum in major clinical disciplines
    • Curriculum should address:
      • Content
        • To include discipline core content as well as interdisciplinary topic areas that bridge traditional clerkship content boundaries
        • Clinical Skills
      • Attitudes and behaviors
        • To include professional conduct, self-directed learning, and use of resources/information management
  • Ensure that basic science objectives are part of the curriculum in all clerkships and that clinically relevant basic science concepts are addressed and evaluated in the learning of clinical material
  • Insist on quality educational practices in all clerkships and work collaboratively to identify resources to improve the curriculum when weaknesses are identified
    • Educational practices to include: format and delivery of learning activities, student assessment, program evaluation, available educational resources
  • Assure that the curriculum includes specific objectives, learning activities and assessments that address professionalism in medicine
  • Provide a curriculum that exposes students to a diverse patient population with a wide variety of acute and chronic medical problems
  • Realize the value of interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and student assessment and strive to make interdepartmental teaching activities a part of each clerkship curriculum
  • Assure that the Third Year Curriculum facilitates vertical integration of the SIU School of Medicine curriculum by communicating, coordinating and integrating with the curricula of Years One, Two, Four and Doctoring.
