Inpatient Rotation
The inpatient rotation of the clerkship consists of three weeks of ward centered activities. The wards are located on the 5th floor of St. John’s Children’s Hospital. Activities during inpatient include patient rounds, documentation of progress notes, participating in admission and discharge of patients, attendance at family centered rounds, heme/onc rounds, morning report and check-out rounds.
Students congregate in the PIMC conference room at 6:45 AM every morning to determine new patient assignments for that day. By having patient assignments before 7 AM, students are able to round with the attending physicians. Students also participate in check out rounds between the night residents and the day residents. This provides the opportunity to learn about patients’ progress and observe the hand-off process.
Students
who are not on call distribute new patients
among themselves, ensuring that they have a variety
of patient problems, including complexity. The
student pager is used to communicate new admissions.
It is passed among students through out the day.
“On-call” is from 5pm until 10:30 pm Monday – Friday and noon until 5:30 pm on Saturday. Students also attend check out rounds with the residents when on-call. The ‘on-call’ student must attend resident checkout rounds. This student is responsible for presenting the check out information for one of his/her patients. The senior resident will determine which patient the student will present and will provide feedback on this essential skill.
During the weekdays students attend the clerkship streamers as scheduled. Streamers are case based sessions and attendance is required. After the streamer students report to the ward for new patient assignments.
Pediatric Grand Rounds are every Thursday at 8 am in Bunn Auditorium. Students attend this educational activity every week during the clerkship.
On Saturdays, each student will make rounds beginning at 7:00 am. When rounds are completed students who are not on call may leave after checking out with the resident. The student on-call stays until 5:30pm (unless otherwise specified on the call schedule).
The
“switch” from inpatient to outpatient happens on
Monday of week 4. Students have Sunday off between
the “switch.”
Outpatient Rotation
During the outpatient rotation of the clerkship students spend two weeks with a preceptor and attend his/her clinics along with assigned specialty clinics. Clinics are held in a variety of locations including St. John’s Pavilion, Prairie Cardiovascular Center, St. John’s Children’s Hospital and pediatric clinics in Springfield and the surrounding community.
Some faculty ask that students review charts in preparation for clinic. This gives the student an idea of the patient problems that will be seen and allows time for reading up on diagnoses and problems unique to the specialty.

Students also attend morning report (except those students on nursery) at 8:00 a.m. on Monday and Friday. Location may change but generally is on the 4th floor of the Women and Children’s Center in conferences rooms A/B or C/D.

Nursery Rotation
The nursery rotation consists of one week of the clerkship and is held on the 3rd floor of the Carol Jo Vecchie Women and Children’s Center. Students work with an SIU newborn attending physician for the week. Generally students arrive at 6:30 AM in order to “pre-round” on infants on the service. Rounds with the attending physician begin at 8:00 AM. There are also planned activities such as didactic sessions during the nursery week.
Students are required to attend (and document on their ED2 card) a vaginal delivery and c-section as well as exam of jaundiced and normal newborns during this week. These are signed off by the supervising physician.
Newborn clinic is held on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 am to noon. This clinic is located on the 4th floor of the St. John’s Pavilion in hall 5. There students see babies for their initial outpatient newborn exam or 2 month well child visit.
