Sick Leave - Non-Accruable
Full-time faculty members with either continuing or term appointment have forty-three (43)
non-accruable sick days at the beginning of each fiscal year. The fiscal year begins on July
1st. For appointments of less than a year, sick leave is prorated at the rate of approximately 3-1/2 days for each month of an appointment.
The new balance of non-accruable sick lave for the year is awarded on July 1st of each year when the unused balance from the previous fiscal year is
dropped.
Sick Leave - Accruable
Permanent
Faculty, Principal Administrative and Research employees who hold a continuing appointment earn 7.2 days of sick leave each fiscal year. For those appointed after the beginning of the fiscal year or who resign or retire prior to the end of the fiscal year, the accrual of sick leave is prorated at 0.6 day for each month of appointment. There is no maximum for accruable sick leave. Employees holding term appointment are not eligible for accruable sick leave.
Sabbatical Leave
Full-time tenured employees of SIU Physicians & Surgeons, Inc. are eligible for sabbatical leave after six years with the school or after six years from the end of a previous sabbatical
leave.
If an employee holds a fiscal year appointment, he or she may be granted a sabbatical leave at full pay for up to six months or a sabbatical leave at half-pay for a full year. The remainder of a sabbatical may be supplemented for up to the full amount of an employee's salary by external sources awarded to the University for that purpose.
Professional Development Leave
Paid professional development leaves are available to faculty and administrative/professional employees but must not exceed a period of one (1) year. In order to qualify for this type of leave, an employee must demonstrate the benefits of the leave
for both the School and the employee.
Temporary Leave with Pay
A temporary leave with pay may be allowed for emergency leaves for illness of family members, participation in disaster relief services, bereavement, military service and jury duty. Each type of leave has different criteria for leaves with pay.
Participation
in Disaster Relief Services
With
appropriate proper notification and approval, up to 20 days absence with
pay may be granted during any 12-month period to an employee who is
participating in specialized disaster relief services as a certified
disaster service volunteer of the American Red Cross. Such leave
shall be granted only for services related to a disaster occurring within
the state of Illinois.
Bereavement
A
leave of up to 3 days with pay will be granted for employees to attend the
funeral of a member of the immediate family or household. For
these purposes, the immediate family is defined as spouse, child, parent,
brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild and corresponding in-laws.
Household includes anyone maintaining a family relationship living in an
employee's home. Approval will be granted for leave with pay of 1
day to attend the funeral of a relative outside the immediate family or
household or to serve as a pallbearer at a funeral.
Jury
Duty
Employees
called for jury duty or subpoenaed by any legislative, judicial or
administrative tribunal will be granted a leave with pay. During the
period the employee is actually serving on a jury or is required by a
court or other tribunal to be present as a witness, the employee will
continue to receive their normal compensation. At other times when
the court or other tribunal is not in session, the employee is expected to
be at work. Employees who are required to appear in court as
defendants or plaintiffs in civil or criminal actions do not qualify for
this type of leave.
Military
Service
A
leave with pay will be granted for the fulfillment of employees' annual
military obligations in any component of the armed forces of the United
States. Compensation for such leave will be computed at the employee's
normal rate of pay, not to exceed 10 working days per fiscal year.
When employees are activated in any component of the armed forces of the
United States because of civil disturbance, disaster or other local
emergency, employees may be compensated for this duty in addition to the
annual military obligation. The cumulative maximum of such leaves,
described above, shall not exceed 20 working days per fiscal year.
Employee
compensation during leaves for specialized or advanced military training
or during interruptions of university employment for active military
service will be governed by applicable state and/or federal laws.
Employees, after performing military services, are entitled to continued
employment or reinstatement and to those other rights and benefits
protected by state and/or federal law. Upon their return, employees
will receive the same salaries they received when the leave becomes
effective plus the average percentage increases made in their units during
their absence.
Other Leaves of Absence
An employee may be granted a leave of absence without pay to accommodate a number of situations. These include a visiting appointment at another university, a travel or research opportunity, advanced study or other personal reasons, including school visitation and family and medical leave. Faculty and administrative employees who hold continuing appointments
are eligible to receive a leave of absence without pay. A leave of absence without pay will normally be granted for a period of up to one (1) year. |
