What
is Extra-Help?
Extra-Help
(EH) is a Civil Service appointment type designed to meet the temporary
staffing needs of the University.
How
long can I work?
Extra-Help
employees at SIU School of Medicine are eligible to work 845 hours, which is
equal to approximately 5 months of full-time employment. Once you have
exhausted your hours of work you must be off payroll for 30 days, after
which you are again eligible for temporary work assignments.
If
my department tells me that they no longer need me and I am still
available for temporary work, what should I do?
All
extra-help positions have a designated ending date; however the position
may be terminated earlier based upon the operational needs of the
employing department. If your extra-help assignment is over and you still
have hours left that you are eligible to work,
you can call Human Resources to request another assignment.
How
often are Extra-Help employees paid?
Extra-Help
employees are paid bi-weekly (every other Friday).
Can Extra-Help positions be temp-to-hire?
The
rules of the State Universities Civil Service System do not provide an opportunity
for Extra-Help appointments to be converted to Civil Service.
However, Extra-Help employees are encouraged to apply for any permanent
positions in which they become interested.
Do
you have a PRN nursing pool?
SIU
School of Medicine does not maintain a PRN nursing pool, per se, but is always
recruiting for RN, LPN and Medical Assistants that are interested in
working in a temporary capacity. If you would like to request an

What
are the normal working hours of SIU School of Medicine?
The
standard business hours of SIU-SM are 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through
Friday; however, certain departments also operate during the evening
and/or on weekends.
If
I am no longer interested in being contacted for EH, who do I tell?
If
you are not currently interested or available for a temporary work
assignment, just call the Office of Human Resources at 545-0223 and request
that your name be placed on inactive status. Should your interest
and availability later change, you may request that your record be
reactivated.
