Clerical Categories Definition
GENERAL CLERICAL

$8.50-$10.50/hour

Typing speed:  0-25 words per minute
 

Performs general office work in support of departmental operations.  May require clerical skills in a variety of areas, such as: alphabetizing, spelling, mathematics, grammar, proofreading, keyboarding, etc.  May also require knowledge of business telephone etiquette.
Types of Positions: Clerical Assistant, Clerk, Library Clerk, Telephone Operator, Microfilm Operator/Technician, Human Resource Assistant

CLINIC RECEPTIONIST

$8.50-10.50/hour

Typing speed:  15 words per minute
 

Performs reception work, entering and retrieving information using computerize equipment while interacting with customers in person and via the telephone.  

 

Types of Positions: Ambulatory Care Aide

BOOKKEEPING

$9.25-12.00/hour

 

Performs clerical activities in support of monetary transactions.  May include posting to accounts, mathematical calculations, such as for payroll, cashiering activities, etc.

ADVANCED CLERICAL

$9.00-11.50/hour

 

Typing speed:  25-40 words per minute

 

Performs clerical work that required advances skill or is specialized in nature.  Work is most often confidential, sensitive, and/or supervisory.

 

Types of Positions: Human Resource Representative, Benefits Counselor, Collection Specialist, Medical Insurance Specialist, Statistical Clerk, Chief Clerk, Customer Service Representative (Call Center)

SECRETARIAL


$9.25-12.00/hour

 

Typing speed:  40 words per minute required

 

 

Performs skilled clerical work primarily related to the production and/or processing of documents in support of a supervisor and/or a unit.  Position requires high keyboarding skill with responsibility for grammar, spelling, formatting, and editing.  Proficiency with computer software packages is also required.

COMPUTING

Provides technical support in the installation, operation, and/or maintenance of hardware and software.  May include mainframe, RC and/or networked systems and may provide training to users.  Requires specific and specialized education, training or experience in a field related to computing.  
 
Types of Positions: Microcomputer Support Specialist, LAN Specialist, Data Processing Analyst, Procedures & Systems Analyst, Systems Programmer, Telecommunications Network Specialist

MEDICAL

$10.00-14.00/hour

 

Performs work that requires education and/or training in a medical field or performs work that is directly related to the support of medical services or research.  
 
Types of Positions: Medical Assistant, Medical Laboratory Technician, Orthopedic Technician, Nursing Technician

Other Definition
SERVICE, MAINTENANCE or TECHNICAL SUPPORT positions Positions performing service, maintenance, or technical support functions.
Types of Positions: Building Service Worker, Distribution Clerk, Mailing Equipment Operator/Expeditor, Press Technician, Laboratory Animal Caretaker, Security Guard, Medical Laboratory Assistant, Laboratory Mechanic, Electronics Technician, and Graphics Designer.
Extra Help used to fill in for staff in positions represented by BOE Local 399 will be hired in accordance with the approved hiring rates for the appropriate classification.

STANDARDIZED PATIENTS

$12.00/hour

Receives training and performs as patient simulator.  Patient simulation exercises are a part of the Problem-Based Learning Curriculum for medical students.

CLINICAL TRIAL COORDINATOR

$12.00-17.00/hour
Assists with coordination of clinical drug/device trials.  Requires good clinical skills and working knowledge of protocols and procedures.
 

RESEARCH AIDE

$7.50-10.00/hour
This Extra Help title is created specifically for High School students who wish to have a short-term appointment in a research environment assisting with routine laboratory procedures.  All participants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment.
 

STUDENT WORKER

no less than minimum wage
(salary in excess of $10.00/hour requires HR approval)
College students who qualify under the definition of Student Worker, in accordance with rule 250.70(f) of the State Universities Civil Service System Statute and Rules.  Due to the rarity of student workers on the medical school campus, we have no separate payroll or employment system designed for students only; therefore, we process them as Extra Help but their conditions of employment are based upon the SUCSS guidelines.
