Mentors and Preceptors

Each student is assigned a physician mentor and preceptor for the clerkship.  The mentor and student meet weekly for at least one hour per meeting.  The student will present patients to the mentor and receive feedback regarding the oral case presentation.   

In addition, the mentor scores the student’s written H&Ps.  During the mentor meeting feedback will be provided to the student regarding their written work. 

Students attend the preceptor’s ambulatory pediatric clinics.  This provides the preceptor an opportunity to provide teaching as well as evaluate the student’s clinical  performance.  

SIU faculty may serve as both preceptor and mentor.  There are also community pediatricians that function as clinic preceptors.  Students assigned with these physicians will have an SIU physician mentor.
