Welcome to the SIU School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics website
I invite you to explore our pages to learn more about all aspects
of our program - teaching, research, and excellent pediatric patient
care.
Our mission is to meet the health care needs of
children and their families in Central and Southern Illinois through
the provision of high quality, coordinated care of children with
acute and chronic conditions with inpatient, ambulatory, and community-based
programs. What does this mean? We are committed to improving the
health and lives of children.
We have entered an exciting phase of growth and development within
the department. Numerous sub specialists have recently joined our
program and further recruitment continues. Our main affiliate, St.
John's Children's Hospital, is a member of the National Association
of Children's Hospitals and Relation Institutions, the only facility
in our region, dedicated to the well being of children.
The Department of Pediatrics, along with St. John's Children's Hospital,
is a local and regional referral and consultation center that provides
comprehensive patient care for children. Many of our physicians
are recognized nationally and internationally for their clinical
expertise and research endeavors to enhance our knowledge of diseases
such as Opsoclonus-Myoclonus Syndrome, obesity in pediatrics, childhood
cancers, respiratory illnesses in the neonate, as well as many other
disorders. We are also committed to education. Medical students
rotate through our department to gain experience in pediatric medicine.
Our residency program is fully accredited and is dedicated to graduating
the finest pediatric physicians.
We all are proud to be a part of this dynamic medical community.
Again, I welcome you to our web site and I know that you will be
as impressed as I am with what the SIU Department of Pediatrics
has to offer.
Sincerely,
Mark Puczynski, MD
Chairman, Department of Pediatrics
Medical Director, St. John's Children's Hospital
