In 1999, St. John's, Memorial Medical Center and SIU School of Medicine joined forces to establish the Southern Illinois Trauma Center (SITC). The SITC is a Level 1 Trauma Center - meaning it is designated to care for patients who are at risk of losing life or limb. The Level 1 designation rotates annually between the two hospitals, however children 12 years and under who have suffered a trauma are always brought to
St. John's Children's Hospital.
