Dr. Michelle Miner

We are so glad you have decided to look at our program, and we are certain once you see what we have to offer, you will walk away as excited about it as we are. We are a diverse residency program committed to providing a challenging curriculum in a supportive atmosphere. We regularly hear back from former residents thanking us for their training and sharing that they did indeed feel prepared to enter "the real world". Whether your goal is continued fellowship training or general pediatric practice, you will graduate our program competent, confident, and ready to embrace the next phase of your medical career.

We are dedicated to resident education. Our core lecture series is a rotating three-year curriculum taking from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Academic Pediatric Society to prepare you for Boards. These conferences are given on Thursday afternoons and are "protected" time - clinical duties are excused to ensure all residents can attend. We have a variety of departmental conferences attended by residents and faculty to discuss current cases and recent pediatric literature. We look closely at clinical experiences to ensure our residents get a broad picture of the entire field of pediatrics, with all its subspecialties. We are constantly evaluating our curriculum and thinking about ways to keep it fresh, innovative and exciting. We meet with residents on a regular basis to talk about what is going well, and where we can improve.

In clinic, you will have your own panel of patients that call you their pediatrician. Our patient population is much more diverse than most academic centers and is comprised of both underserved as well as insured individuals. We offer true "continuity of care" - many of our patients come to the SIU Pediatrics Residency Clinic from birth and stay until we set them up with an internist before college! You will have the opportunity to follow your patients throughout your 3 years here, watching them grow and develop. As their primary care physician if they need help with school, insurance companies, ordering medical equipment, etc. they will come to you for assistance. This is not only gratifying but also provides excellent hands-on experience for learning to advocate for your patients' needs and navigate various care systems.

St. John's Children's Hospital is a wonderful place to practice pediatric medicine. Our facility is a beautiful, recently constructed, state-of-the-art Children's Hospital with the best technology available. Our main pediatric floor consists of a ten bed PICU, an intermediate care unit and a general pediatric ward. Our 40-bed NICU serves as the only regional Level III NICU in downstate Illinois. The Hospital and pediatric department are growing at incredible rates. It's a very exciting time to be here!

Springfield is a wonderful community to live in. You can choose to live in a loft in the downtown area, in the residential neighborhoods surrounding one of the beautiful city parks, or even in a rural "country" setting--but regardless of which suits you, you will still be within 20 minutes of the hospital. No long commutes! For those with a family Springfield can't be beat - the schools, cost of living, and community services are all top notch. For our history buffs, there is no better place than the home of Abraham Lincoln & the State Capitol! For those who like the city life, downtown Springfield offers a fabulous array of restaurants, shops, theater, and street fairs. There is something here for everyone.

With all this in mind, come visit us! Your interview day will be relaxed and enjoyable; you will be paired with a current resident to serve as your personal tour guide and by the end of the day we will do our very best to answer all of your questions fully and honestly. We also host medical students for elective rotations. We look forward to meeting you!
