Laboratory Experiences in Physiology

 

 

General Information
PHSL 208 is a 1 credit-hour course designed to introduce basic laboratory procedures and small animal experimentation to non-science and undecided students. There is one two-hour laboratory per week. Concurrent or prior enrollment in PHSL 201 or the equivalent is a prerequisite.

Week of:

1/18 Class Orientation and safety instruction ; Introduction to Microscopy; view prepared slide, make and view slides of human cheek cells.

1/25 Homeostasis and negative feedback exercises, Introduction to Spectrophotometry; measurement of glucose concentration

2/1 Demonstrate the principles of Diffusion, Osmosis, and Tonicity and a computer exercise 1.

2/8 Measurement of Enzyme Activity and Computer Exercise 2.

2/15 Frog dissection; observing and recording a compound action potential.

2/22 Exercises to demonstrate reflexes and sensory perception.

3/1 Frog dissection; demonstrate, observe, and record twitch, summation, tetanus and fatigue in a classic frog muscle preparation. Exercises to demonstrate reflexes and sensory perception.

3/8 Spring Break

3/15 Frog dissection; observe and record effects of various drugs on frog heart prepartion.

3/22 Take and record Electrocardiogram data on human subjects; learn to distinguish heart sounds

3/29 Study human respiration using a Spirometer

4/5 Study Renal System, microscopic examination of urine, use Chemstix SG10 to study properties of urine.

4/12 Study digestion of proteins by Pepsin and digestion of Starch by Amylase.

4/19 Reproduction Lab: Anatomy of system, vaginal smears from rat

4/26Final Lab Report Due

5/3 No Lab.

5/10 Finals Week
