SIU Physicians and Surgeons: Where Knowledge is Quality

SUBMIT NEW STUDY INFORMATION

A Study of Thoracoscopic Treatment for Diffuse Bullous Emphysema - Ending Date: 2010

Possible benefit: Patients who have emphysema and undergo lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) may have improved pulmonary function
Purpose of trial: This study involves collecting data on several variables including quality of life; information will be collected both before and after surgery
Drug/Device being tested: N/A
Sponsoring Department: Surgery
SIU Faculty Physician: Stephen R. Hazelrigg, M.D.
Sponsoring Company: N/A
Number of other sites in trial: N/A
Type of patients needed: Patients diagnosed with emphysema
Age: 18 years and older
Health status: Patients diagnosed with emphysema who have specific results on tests of their pulmonary function
Number of visits required: There is an initial assessment visit. If a patient meets criteria for the study, then the patient will have a hospitals stay of 7-10 days following surgery. Follow-up visits are at two weeks, three months and annually after surgery
Length of study involvement: We continue to follow patients for their lifetime
Tests to be performed: To determine if the patient is a candidate for lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS), several tests are performed -- a CT scan of the chest, pulmonary function and arterial blood gases (ABG) tests, a 6-minute walk, a differential ventilation perfusion scan, an echocardiogram, and quality of life tests. The follow-up visits will include repeat of the pulmonary function and ABG tests and a 6-minute walk
