SIU Physicians & Surgeons and the SIU School of Medicine are committed to the advancement of medical knowledge for the benefit of society. As medical research advances, the treatment of many human diseases and conditions also advances.
Clinical research trials are conducted at SIU School of Medicine in order to gain knowledge that may help future patients. This is different from routine health care that is based upon the best known treatment and is provided with the goal of helping an individual patient. The medical school has several committees that review research projects. For example, clinical trials are carefully reviewed for compliance with federal and state regulations by the Springfield Committee for Research Involving Human Subjects. Clinical trials are generally funded by pharmaceutical companies. Other research projects at the medical school are funded by the federal government, including the National Institutes of Health, health associations, private foundations and the State of Illinois. If you decide to take part in any study and are accepted, there may or may not be direct medical benefits to you. Specific details of each clinical trial vary. While there usually is no charge to the participants for tests and medications directly related to studies, there may be added costs to you and/or your insurance company for continuing medical care and/or hospitalization. Results of studies are usually shared with your personal physician. These matters should be discussed with the SIU faculty physician responsible for the study and/or the study coordinator as part of the process of giving informed consent.
Information about various clinical trials is posted by department as it is provided by SIU faculty physicians. Visitors to this website can contact the study coordinator via email or phone regarding possible participation.
