Possible benefit:
|
This study will not likely benefit the
patient who volunteers to participate. It is hoped that information
learned will benefit lung cancer patients in the future |
|
Purpose of trial:
|
The trial is designed to determine the
significance of occult metastasis (hidden changes or movement of cancerous
cells), by testing fluid placed in the chest before and again after
surgery. The ability to measure the presence of cancerous cells could
help affect the long-term survival of patients undergoing surgery
for non-small cell lung cancer |

Type of patients needed:
|
Patients who will have lung surgery
for non-small cell lung carcinoma |
|
Age:
|
18 years and older |
|
Health status:
|
Patients must be medically fit to undergo
surgery for lung cancer including lobectomy (removal of a lung lobe)
or pneumonectomy (removal of the entire lung). They cannot have been
treated for cancer in the last five years |
|
Number of visits required:
|
Patients are seen before and after surgery,
two weeks after surgery, and at 4, 8, 12, 18, 24 and 30 months and
then once a year |
|
Length of study involvement:
|
Patients will be followed for their
lifetime |
|
Tests to be performed:
|
Tests include those routinely used to
prepare for lung cancer surgery -- chest X-ray, CAT scan, serum laboratory
analysis, and possibly bone or brain scan. Follow-up visits include
a chest X-ray |
