The Effect of Sternotomy versus Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery on Postoperative Pain and Associated Complications of Pulmonary Resection Patients

Purpose of trial:

To collect data after lung surgery, looking at the incisional approach of surgery ( sternotomy verses thoracoscopy) to see which causes the least amount of pain for bilateral lung surgery

Protocol Summary:

Surgery is done by either going down the breast bone (sternotomy) or having 3 small incisions on back sides of the chest. Data will be collected pre-operative, 6 hours post-operative, and twice daily while in the hospital, and at one month. We use visual analogue scale, the Brief Pain Inventory, and incentive spirometry to help assess pain and any compromise of pulmonary function
