 Stephen Robinson, M.D. Director, Adult Outpatient Services The Division of Adult Outpatient Psychiatry is part of the Department of Psychiatry within the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The division is responsible for providing psychiatric care over a broad range of general psychiatric issues. Specialty clinics include geriatric psychiatry, and special needs / developmental disabilities. Our mission within the medical school is to provide psychiatric education to medical students and residents. Medical students participate in clinical activities during their third-year clerkship, as well as electives in their fourth year. Psychiatry residents and residents in the joint internal medicine-psychiatry program begin their outpatient clinical experiences in their second year. As the one of the fundamental purposes of the medical school is the advancement of knowledge through research, the division is also involved in several research projects. New Patient Evaluation Clinic: This is a general psychiatry clinic for the evaluation of adults, 18 years old and over, who have a wide range of psychiatric problems. Patients will be evaluated by a team of professionals including a faculty psychiatrist, faculty psychotherapist, psychiatric resident, and a medical student. General Psychiatric Clinic: Diagnostic and therapeutic services are provided to adults ages 18 and over. Patients are seen by a psychiatric resident under the supervision of an attending physician. Geriatric Clinic: This is a psychiatry specialty clinic for adults ages 62 and over. The goal of the clinic is to provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services to elderly patients suffering from a wide range of psychiatric problems. Patients will be evaluated by a team of professionals including a faculty psychiatrist, psychiatric resident, and a medical student. Psychotherapy Services: Faculty include Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, and Ph.D. psychologists, as well as residents (in training under the supervision of attending faculty), and offer various types of psychotherapy services. These include: short and long term individual psychotherapy, couples counseling, short term crisis resolution, grief counseling, and family therapy. Substance Abuse Services: Substance abuse services are provided by certified, licensed counselors and physicians for adults and adolescents. These services can either be the primary focus of care or in conjunction with the care of an emotional disorder. Forensic Services: Faculty within the Adult Outpatient Clinic are available to confer on a wide range of forensic psychiatric issues. Criminal forensic issues include fitness to stand trial, mental state or sanity at the time of an offense, competency to waive Miranda rights, and sentencing / mitigation. Civil forensic issues include guardianship, independent psychiatric evaluations for disability, and fitness for duty. The department has two board-certified forensic psychiatrists on staff at the Springfield campus, as well as a child psychiatrist. Staff psychologists are available for consultation and administer standardized psychological and neuropsychological instruments. |
