Southern Illinois University School of Medicine - Division of Developmental Disabilities

Medical Education

Advancement in medical education is of paramount concern when considering improving health care for people with intellectual disabilities. Few medical schools or residency programs offer comprehensive curriculums addressing the unique psychiatric and medical concerns of this population. Enabling medical students and residents to provide compassionate and efficacious health care to all people with developmental disabilities is the Divisions  number one objective

The Division of Developmental Disabilities at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has developed several venues that provide comprehensive educational experiences for its students and residents of psychiatry, internal medicine, and family practice.  Fellows in pulmonary medicine and orthopedic surgery also have devoted opportunities afforded to them that provide supervised experiences in providing health care services to people with intellectual disabilities, outside of their regularly scheduled continuity clinics
