    • Residents in psychiatry are provided 10 lecture hours covering important topics of “Dual Diagnosis”
      • Introduction to Developmental Disabilities/moral/ethical/legal issues
      • Team concept/family issues/administrative concerns
      • Mental status examination/diagnostic tools
      • Common psychiatric disorders and their manifestation
      • Understanding maladaptive behavior and behavior exacerbations
        • Environmental causes
        • Medical causes
        • Psychiatric causes
        • Side effects and adverse reactions to medications and polypharmacy
        • Emotional issues
      • Common and serious medical concerns for people with intellectual and other complex disabilities
        • Physical examination
        • Case examples
        • Diagnostic challenges
    • Residents in Internal Medicine and Family Practice are offered lectures specific to developmental disability health care during their clinical rotation in developmental disabilities.  Approximately four hours of didactic lectures are presented during the course of their rotation
      • Introduction to developmental disability psychiatry/moral and ethical issues
      • Team concept/family issues/administrative concerns
      • Understanding maladaptive behavior and behavior exacerbations
      • Common medical concerns for people with intellectual and other complex disabilities
        • Pneumonia/pulmonary fibrosis/aspiration/sinusitis/otitis
        • Constipation/bowel obstruction/bowel perforation/GERD
        • Osteoporosis/musculoskeletal disorders (pathology of the spine)
        • Triaging medical conditions
        • Specific use of technology and laboratory studies
        • Occult pain/occult infections
        •
