The Division of Developmental Disabilities
operates functionally through the Southern Illinois University School of
Medicine's, Department of Psychiatry. The Division was originally
founded in 1994 by Earl Loschen. MD, to enhance medical education in the
area of dual diagnosis (mental retardation co-occurring with an
additional psychiatric disorder). Since its inception, the Division of
Developmental Disabilities has gradually evolved and currently provides
clinical and didactic education to medical students and residents in
psychiatry, primary care and other specialties and has expanded its
Technical Assistance Program. Additionally, the Division offers
administrative and consultative services to residential centers and
community agencies; maintains an outpatient psychiatry clinic; and has
developed a core research venue specifically focusing on intellectual
disabilities. The division also manages psychiatric services for private
ICFDDs and comprehensive medical and psychiatric services for state
operated developmental centers. Our clinical approach to people with
complex neurodevelopmental disabilities is holistic and encompasses the
"bio-psycho-social model", which takes into consideration the entire
person and his/her environment. Through support from the Illinois
Department of Human Services and the Southern Illinois University School
of Medicine's, Department of Psychiatry, the Division of Developmental
Disabilities is enabled, in-part, to achieve its goal of improving the
lives of all people with intellectual disabilities through education,
research and direct clinical care. |
