About

Ronald Kanwischer is recently retired from SIU School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.  He was an Assistant Professor who served as the Outpatient Residency Services Coordinator, Director of Continuing Education for the Department of Psychiatry, as well as a psychotherapist and teacher.  He has over thirty years of experience in the fields of substance abuse and mental health.  His teaching, research and clinical experience over the last twenty years has focused on persons with co-morbid disorders of substance abuse and mental health.  He is a published author with a textbook on learning to be a professional human service worker and articles on general substance abuse, dual diagnosis, and Motivational Interviewing.  Mr. Kanwischer consults to a variety of service systems on this issue including the Illinois Department of Human Services, community agencies, and organizations working on integration of behavioral health into primary care.  He is a past member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, and teaches Motivational Interviewing in workshops and on an individual basis.  He continues to see private patients through SIU Healthcare.
