Geriatric Psychiatry

Clinical opportunities to work with geriatric patients are abundant in the Department of Psychiatry.  Led by a board-certified geriatric psychiatrist, medical students and residents rotate through diverse settings including the geropsychiatry inpatient unit at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, the geropsychiatry outpatient clinic at SIU Psychiatry, also in Springfield, and ECT for elderly patients at both Memorial Medical Center and HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Additional opportunities are available for interested students and residents to participate in a geropsychiatry intensive outpatient program (IOP), to follow patients in area skilled nursing facilities, to rotate through the Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders at the SIU Department of Neurology, to take electives at Decatur Memorial Hospital,a large geropsych inpatient unit in Decatur, Illinois.

Students and residents have the opportunity to work with other geriatric team members including social workers, psychotherapists, geriatric case managers, dieticians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nursing home administrators, neurologists and geriatricians in both internal medicine and family medicine. Opportunities for research are available through either the Department of Psychiatry or in collaboration with the Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders in the Department of Neurology.
