Alton Mental Health Center is a 135 bed State of Illinois,
Department of Human Services run hospital for treatment
of the mentally ill. The hospital is located in Alton, Illinois,
about 30 minutes from St. Louis, MO.



Both a forensic and civil patient population are served. One hundred
twenty beds are forensic, meaning the population served has been
accused, but not convicted of committing a crime and has been found
either unfit to stand trial or not guilty, by reason of insanity. The
forensic population includes adult males, adult females and those dually
diagnosed with mental illness and mental retardation. The civil unit
serves approximately twenty adult male or female patients.



The hospital is affiliated with Southern Illinois University and is a training site
for medical students, residents, and psychology and social work students.
