The formal educational curriculum features regularly scheduled seminars, case
conferences, and presentations that run throughout the year. Our seminars
are resident-directed, rather than lecture based, in keeping with the
philosophy of the school and of the department that active learning is the
most effective, and that all of us are lifelong learners. In addition, residents
participate in journal club and are encouraged to attend special conferences
and workshops. Residents have the yearly opportunity to present their own
work to the department.

SIU was one of the first programs in the country to institute a Universal
Issues Curriculum. This is a bimonthly series in which residents of all
specialties meet and learn about issues that are common to all specialties,
such as ethics, medical economics, lifelong learning skills and practice
management.

Our core seminar series is designed and timed to support the residents' level
of training and experience.
