Chief, Division of Public & Community Psychiatry

Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry's Division of
Public and Community Psychiatry. The division is based
on a Public Academic collaboration encompassing three
public state psychiatric hospitals serving both civil and
forensic patients. The catchment area for the civil
inpatients is the southern thirty-two counties of Illinois
with a population of close to 2 million. There are over
twenty community mental health centers serving the
outpatient needs of psychiatric patients. The three hospitals serve as the
base for trainees, however often the education includes training in the
community outpatient clinics as well. Though farther away from the main
campus, telepsychiatry makes it possible for faculty and trainees to be
closely connected with colleagues in Springfield. Training opportunities
include an elective rotation for medical students, a Rural Psychiatry rotation
for residents in civil areas, an elective rotation for medical students, including
M.D./J.D. students, and a Forensic Psychiatry rotation for residents and
Fellows in forensics.
