Message from Stephen M. Soltys, M.D.
Professor and Chair, SIU Department of Psychiatry

Thank you for visiting our website. Founded in 1972, we are maturing into an organization that provides high quality clinical treatment, outstanding teaching and solid efforts in research and community service. In this website, you can find out more about our faculty and our various clinical divisions.

The Adult Services Division provides a comprehensive array of outpatient and inpatient psychiatric services to adults. Philip Pan, M.D., Outpatient Service Director and Jeffrey Bennett, M.D. staff a variety of clinics for adults with general Psychiatric problems, including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. Outpatient services include a psychosocial service rehab clinic called Community Support Network that provides intensive psychiatric and case management services to adults with severe psychiatric illnesses. Vinod Alluri, M.D. provides psychiatric care via the local mental health center in Macoupin County as well as at McFarland Mental Health Center. Inpatient services (Stephen Robinson, M.D., Director) include acute inpatient services at Memorial Medical Center and St. John's Hospital (Haojiang Huang, M.D.). Outpatient therapy services are provided by Ron Kanwischer, L.C.P.C., Jill Koester, L.C.P.C. and Gene Brodland, L.C.S.W.

Our Developmental Disabilities Division (Jeffrey Bennett, M.D., Division Chief) is among the strongest in the country and has a national reputation as an innovator of developing systems of care for the developmentally disabled as well as an active research program.

The Child Psychiatry Division (Mary Dobbins, M.D., Division Chief) is continually growing with the recent additions of Ayame Takahashi, M.D., Manisha Punwani, M.D. and Pamela Campbell, M.D. In July 2009, our first full class of Fellows will begin training in our new fully-accredited Child and Adolescent program. In May, 2008 Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center (an 80 bed child and adolescent psychiatric hospital) opened its doors in close affiliation with SIU. Dr. Punwani and Dr. Campbell have autism clinics, and Dr. Dobbins coordinates our telepsychiatry outreach effort. Outpatient psychotherapy services are provided by Sandra Vicari, Ph.D. and Rebecca Loschen, L.C.S.W.

The Forensic Psychiatry Division (Philip Pan, M.D., Division Chief, Manisha Punwani, M.D. and Stephen Robinson, M.D.) provides forensic services in Springfield.

In July 2008 the Division of Psycho-Oncology became the Department's newest division. Led by Chad Noggle, Ph.D., it will assure that quality psychological support services are available to patients at the SIU Simmons Cancer Institute, while engaging in state-of-the-art research and education for students and residents.

We have a fully-accredited four year general psychiatry training program as well as a five-year medicine/psychiatry program. Manisha Punwani, M.D. is the Director of the Residency Program. David Resch, M.D. is the Director of the Medicine/Psychiatry Division in the Department of Internal Medicine. We continue to be a leader in student training and education research with the psychiatric clerkship being directed by Stephen Robinson, M.D. Ayame Takahashi, M.D. coordinates our child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship program. An active continuing education program utilizing telepsychiatry opportunities to share clinical information throughout the country is coordinated by Ron Kanwischer, L.C.P.C., C.A.D.C.
