Operating as a private, not-for-profit corporation, Memorial Medical Center (MMC), founded in 1897, offers comprehensive inpatient, outpatient and home health services to the residents of central and southern Illinois. At the core of Memorial Health System's mission is the belief that access to primary care is a key component in providing a full continuum of care in support of community health. Tertiary care available at Memorial includes a variety of specialized services. The Regional Cancer Center provides comprehensive cancer care, including the latest research protocols available through the Community Clinical Oncology Program of the National Cancer Institute. The Regional Kidney Center offers a full range of nephrology and urology services, including dialysis, and the region's only pancreas/kidney transplant program, a joint program with the medical school. MMC's Regional Burn Center is equipped with the latest technologies and facilities for burn care. The MMC/SIU skin culture laboratory is one of the few in the United States performing autologous skin grafts. Other centers of excellence include the Center for Neuromuscular Sciences and the Heart Center at Memorial. The pulmonary medicine department has a full range of diagnostic, rehabilitative and respiratory therapy services and includes two joint programs with SIU -- hyperbaric medicine and a sleep disorders clinic. MMC is also a Level 1 Trauma Center, a joint effort with SIU and St. John's Hospital. The two hospitals alternate responsibility for the trauma center annually. MMC is the flagship of Memorial Health System (MHS). Other MHS affiliates include Memorial Home-Care, Visiting Nurse Association of Central Illinois, Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, St. Vincent Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, Memorial Child Care, Memorial Medical Center Foundation and Healthcare Network Associates, a network of primary care physicians throughout the region.
St. John’s Hospital was founded in 1875 by the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis and is an affiliate of the Hospital Sisters Health System. As a regional health care referral center, it provides tertiary care for the entire central and southern Illinois area. St. John's Children's Hospital provides neonatal intensive care, a Level III Perinatal Center and pediatric services, including pediatric rehabilitation. The center includes an outpatient fetal evaluation laboratory coordinated by SIU School of Medicine and an antenatal unit. The Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit serves 33 counties in Illinois. Other special care areas include an adult intensive care unit, a bone and joint program, and comprehensive cancer care. St. John's also offers adult day care, home health services, and inpatient and home hospice care. About 26,000 surgical procedures are performed each year in the hospital's 25 surgical suites; more than 2,400 of these are open heart surgery procedures. St. John's is recognized as a leader in cardiac services, having the largest heart program in Illinois which includes the Prairie Heart Institute. Approximately 11,000 procedures are performed every year in the seven cardiac catheterization labs, including diagnostic catheterizations and many nonsurgical treatments. The cardiovascular department offers a full range of sophisticated diagnostic services for adult and pediatric cardiology and vascular patients. Individualized rehabilitation services are available for intervention or post-operative fitness. The Southern Illinois Trauma Center is a partnership between Memorial Medical Center, St. John's Hospital and SIU School of Medicine. The two hospitals alternate responsibility for the level 1 trauma center annually. An air/ground transport program is used for critically ill patients. As St. John's Hospital grows and moves into the future, administration and employees remain committed to the Hospital Sisters' philosophy -- all people are created by God and have an intrinsic dignity and value. SIU Trauma Center Dr. John Sutyak, associate professor of surgery at SIU and medical director of the trauma center says, "We have built strong partners with EMS, regional hospitals and the community, providing trauma care at the highest level. Our trauma team and the regional system are organized to provide immediate and in-patient treatment as well as follow-up care after hospitalization, especially for patients with multiple injuries." The Southern Illinois Trauma Center offers the highest level of trauma care between Peoria, Illinois and St. Louis, Missouri. A total of 15 surgeons are on call to operate on trauma patients. SIU senior surgical residents, who've nearly completed their training to be surgeons, serve as part of the team that provides the initial treatment for seriously injured patients. The Southern Illinois Trauma Center is a partnership between Memorial Medical Center, St. John's Hospital and SIU School of Medicine. The Trauma Center alternates yearly between Memorial and St. John's. |
