Diagnostic Radiology Residency
John Becker, M.D.
Program Director
Length of program: Five categorical, preliminary year included
Total Positions: 15 (three per year)
The diagnostic radiology residency program provides the education and experience necessary to practice as a general diagnostic radiologist. The program emphasizes general diagnostic radiology and all subspecialties including interventional radiology, ultrasonography, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging, pediatric radiology, mammography and neuroradiology.
The radiology departments at both affiliated Springfield hospitals and the United Imaging Center, a free-standing magnetic resonance center, comprise the physical facilities of the program. The small size of the program combined with a large number of faculty ensure extensive contact between you and the faculty.
As you develop skills and obtain knowledge in radiology, you receive increasing responsibilities for clinical work, conferences and teaching, and extensive hands-on experience in special procedures.
The first year of this residency is a preliminary medicine residency position which is completed in SIU's Department of Internal Medicine. During the second year, rotations in the subspecialty areas are for one month. During the third and fourth years, rotations are in six-week blocks and include a surgery pathology rotation at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. A portion of the fifth year can be used for electives.
In addition, the department has a strong research and publication program funded by the faculty members. Included in our diagnostic special procedures are angiography, arthrography, myelography, hysterosalpingography, percutaneous needle aspirations and biopsies. Experience in interventional techniques involve the vascular, biliary, genito-urinary systems and women's imaging techniques. You will get extensive hands-on experience in special procedures.
The department has an updated radiology library, including a large volume of audiovisual materials. The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Upon completion of the program, you are board eligible for certification by the American Board of Radiology
