The SIU
Springfield Family Medicine Residency Program
The SIU Springfield Family Medicine Residency is a program of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, and receives many benefits from the medical school linkage. Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in innovative medical education. The Department of Family and Community Medicine has been recognized consistently for its success in attracting medical students to the specialty of Family Medicine. The SIU Springfield Family Medicine Residency is an established program that has educated over one hundred seventy five family physicians since the first resident graduated in 1975. The emphasis on health care reform has provided the program with many additional resources and opportunities. Learning opportunities in a network of hospitals and clinical practices include a longitudinal focus on Obstetrics with additional training being offered as an optional track; a rual medicine experience consisting of a month-long rural medicine rotation including the Mobile Medical Unit; an OB and Pediatric experience in Macoupin County as well as an extensive rural procedures elective; opportunities in Sports Medicine involving two state-of -the-art Sports Medicine facilities in Springfield; and a well-designed Geriatrics curriculum. |
