Reasons Residents Gave for Choosing Our Program..........

Tracy Aldridge......."the wonderful array of faculty who each have their own individual style for practicing medicine in addition to allowing us to find our own style.  The exposure to all the subspecialty fields and excellent patients from which to learn"

Mike Connolly......."During my interview experience, all the residents seemed happy and confident."

Amy Dean......."compassionate, intelligent, non-intimidating faculty; the variety of residents;  competent, unique personalities, different cultures and experiences; location; the teaching involved with the medical school affiliation; great library at the medical school; dynamic residency director"

Tracy Hendricks......."I believe we have some of the best Family Medicine faculty in the country at SIU Springfield.  I would recommend training here VERY HIGHLY!"

Peggy Hu......."The attendings and staff are very friendly, giving support both socially and personally - it feels like a family.  The curriculum is outstanding and it offers a good opportunity for training.  Additionally, the residency is very democratic.  Residents suggestions are accepted and taken seriously which makes us feel as if we are an active part of the residency.

Andrea Humphrey......."I initially moved here for LOVE - my husband, Jon, was in this program.  When I was in medical school, I honestly did not think highly of this program, as it was struggling.  For my first year of residency, I went to another program.  Even though I moved here to be with my husband, I would not have transferred if I didn't think the program had changed dramatically.  The number of residents and faculty have improved enormously.  I feel I have had a great learning experience here and am well prepared for "real doctoring."

Sujata Jere......."I chose this program as it has everything:  a very enthusiastic Program Director, good variety of faculty, good work ethic, good location of hospitals, very friendly staff, a good team of residents."

John Malcott......."I chose SIU because of location, training opportunities and I knew Dr. Wong would be my understudy".

Jim Mitchell......."I was looking for a program that was balanced in the various disciplines we need to know for Family Practice.  By this I mean, basically Internal Medcine, Pediatrics, and OB/Gyn.  I looked at several different programs, but it seemed that many of them tended to emphasize one of the three and deterred from the others.  As a Family Practitioner, we need to have equal exposure to all of them and that is what I found at SIU Springfield.

Not only did I find a balanced curriculum,k but I also found excellent, caring and supportive faculty.  Each faculty member is an outstanding physician with his or her own special area of interest.  Together they comprise a great team who is interested in teaching.  Each of the faculty is open to questions and is willing to treat as colleagues and not as just 'Residents'."

Sharon Palomo......."Being a foreign medical grad, I was looking for a program where I could continue my training and professional growth as a physician and, at the same time, 'feel at home'.  That is exactly what SIU Springfield became to me - 'my second home' as well as a place where I have continued to grow intellectually, emotionally and professionally.  The faculty and staff are greatk, friendly, very supportive...I can't find any more appropriate works to describe them or the program."

Michael Poinsette......."approachability and friendliness of staff; great group of residents"

Anna Richie......."I've never made a better decision.  The faculty, staff, clinic and patients are incredible.  It's a great work environment with lots of learning opportunities.  You feel as if you're 'part of a family' at SIU Springfield.  I could write a novel about the benefits of this residency program."

Yvonne Saunders......."I interviewed at 12 midwest Family Practice programs, hoping ot find one that had a strong rural track, friendly people and high expectations - SIU Springfield has all that and more!"

Laura Shaw......."Although I came to Springfield as a result of a spouse matching in another specialty, I see it now as the biggest blessing of my life!  THis residency has fantastic, knowledgeable faculty, supportive high-caliber residents and a great support staff!  I can't imagine that I could have had a better experience anywhere."

Saira Wahab-Silas......."I went to medical school at SIU and my entire family lives here.  While attending medical school, I became familiar with the program and the faculty.  The atmosphere was positive in the program and the faculty was excellent and approachable.  Additionally, I knew most of the residents because both of my brothers were graduates of SIU Springfield and I knew I would get along well with everyone."

Kirk Wong......."This program was the only program in which the faculty and residents really seemed to enjoy working with each other."

Kim Wyatt......."As a graduate of SIU School of Medicine, before completing medical school, I had become familiar with many of the FP residency faculty.  I had never been anything bu impressed at every encounter I had.  I knew Dr. Albers was fantastic (not to mention the rest of the faculty).  Additionally, as a single parent, I really didn't want to move again after graduation, since I knew the program, this was never a concern.  I have been nothing but happy with my choice during this internship year."

Josh Poos......."Friendly atmosphere, oposed/unoposed.  University appeal with small town feel"

Dawn McCoy......"The whole atmosphere at SIU Springfield is very pro-resident and encourages learning.  All the attendings are very approachable and enthusiastic.  We have a great group of residents who want to learn at every opportunity but also remember to 'have a life outside medicine'.  The facility is well-equipped for procedures, spacious, and staffed by a wonderful, friendly support staff."

Chris Gerber......"I had interviewed at a large number of programs and with few exceptions, programs lacked various ideas I held as key.  Many programs were located in areas/hospitals that lacked resources or a diverse patient population.  In Family medicine it is crucial to be able to recognize a large variety of pathology and only with a wide range of patients can that be accomplished.  Many programs were too small to support the number of residency programs.  Residents were in direct competition with one another for procedures and patient contact.  Or, programs were not extremely friendly.  Residents were unhappy or attendings took minimal interest in them.

SIU Springfield seemed to be the best of both worlds.  Residents have ample opportunity to participate in the care of a wide range of patients in an unopposed setting with specialty resources readily available.  Family Medicine residents have their own patients without competition by other residency programs.  SIU Springfield was also the most friendly place I visited.  Residents were friends with each other and with attendings.  Residency is stressful enough but here you have people to help you along.
