Transfer Policies

Advanced Standing Policy

SIU School of Medicine does not accept applications for advanced standing. Students from foreign medical schools or any other non-LCME approved programs will be required to apply for first-year entry.

Transfer Policy

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine occasionally accepts transfers from other LCME approved allopathic medical schools. Transfer applications are considered only in the event of a vacancy in the class due to attrition of our own students. Transfers are not accepted into the fourth year. In order to be considered for transfer one must meet the following conditions:

  • Be in good academic standing at his/her medical school.
  • Be currently enrolled in an LCME approved medical school.
  • Objectively demonstrate substantial personal hardship will result from his/her inability to live in the Springfield area.

If you feel that your situation meets all of the above criteria, please direct a letter describing in detail your reasons for requesting a transfer to:
