Theresa Boley is an assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. She obtained her bachelor of science in nursing degree at the University of Missouri in 1986 and her master’s in nursing in the family nurse practitioner tract at the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1990. She is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a family nurse practitioner and as a clinical research professional by the Society of Clinical Research Associates. Her professional roles have included staff nurse, education coordinator, head nurse, director of nursing, research associate, and nursing and medical faculty.
Ms. Boley began conducting cardiothoracic research in 1981. Responsibilities in her current position include patient care, research, medical student, resident, and nurse education. Research interests include lung volume reduction surgery, pain management after surgery, lung cancer, quality of life, and cardiac surgery.
Her bibliography includes over 200 publications in medical and nursing journals. Ms. Boley is listed in multiple Who’s Who publications and serves as a reviewer and consulting editor for numerous professional journals.
She has presented numerous times on the national and international levels. She has received several professional awards including the 2002 Licensed Professional Woman of Achievement Award from the Capitol City Chapter of Women in Management. She has also received the 2007 Ruby Award from Illinois Women in Leadership for Great Influence and Commitment to the Community, 2010 AANP Nurse Practitioner State Award for Excellence, 2010 Surgery Resident Research Day Outstanding Research Coordinator Award and 2011 Security Bank and Springfield Business Journal Women of Influence Award.
Ms. Boley is a member of several organizations, including Sigma Theta Tau, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the American Nurses Association, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the Illinois Society of Advanced Practice Nurses.
