Brief Bio

Dr. Carl Arentzen is an associate professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He practices all aspects of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery.

Dr. Arentzen earned his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University in 1972 and his medical degree in 1975 from Duke University Medical School. After receiving his general surgery training at the University of Minnesota in 1983, Dr. Arentzen completed a fellowship in cardiovascular surgery in 1985 from the University of Minnesota. In 1976 he also completed a research fellowship at Duke University Medical Center and another research fellowship at the University of Minnesota in 1981. Upon completion of his residency, he was a faculty member of the Northwestern University School of Medicine for 10 years prior to moving to Springfield, Illinois in 1995.

For nine years prior to joining SIU, Dr. Arentzen was involved in the private practice of cardiothoracic surgery in Springfield. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Arentzen’s professional affiliations include the American College of Surgeons, the International Society for Heart Transplantation and the American Heart Association.
