The goal of this elective is to provide the student with an opportunity to observe patients with common conditions that require care of a plastic surgeon.
At the conclusion of this week, the student will be able to:
1. Understand basic wound closure
2. Describe the gross morphologic and pathologic differences between benign and malignant skin lesions.
3. Describe medical and surgical therapies available for skin cancer.
4. Understand the anatomy of the skin and subcutaneous tissues.

Inpatients: The student will be expected to follow any patients in which they participated in the surgery. Elective cases are performed five days a week and emergency cases at any time. The student is expected to round/write notes on inpatients daily and should complete this prior to morning conference.
The student will be scheduled approximately one or two clinics during a one week rotation.
Morning Conference: Monday, Thursday, and Friday @ 6:30 AM, Baylis 3rd floor conference room.
Wednesday @6:30 AM (ask the chief resident on Tuesday for the location of walk rounds).The student may be asked to present their patient. The discussion will be centered on diagnosis and treatment options, examination of the defect or reconstruction will follow.
The student will be evaluated at the end of the week using the standard evaluation form used in the Department of Surgery.
Call will be scheduled for once a week. A call day is defined as 7 AM to 7 AM the next day. Call is from HOME and is for both MMC and St. John’s Hospital.
Chief residents will assign student activities for the week during Monday morning conference. The student can page the chief resident on Friday for concerns prior to the Monday the rotation begins.
*All students should meet at the Plastic Conference Room Baylis Building 3rd Floor on Monday at 6:30 AM.

*Please sit in the chairs against the wall, the table is reserved for residents and attendings
Monday afternoons: Congenital Head and Neck Clinic or Multidisciplinary
Hand Clinic – all must attend
*Students are welcome at all SIU clinics – you must attend at least 1 clinic a week
(in addition to Monday afternoon clinic)
• Posted on Resident room door every day between 3:30-4:00p
• The Daily will be emailed to you each afternoon
• You need to check the daily each evening to see your assignments
• Assign yourselves a number: MS1, MS2, MS3, etc.
1. Know what cases you are assigned to
2. Read about the case
• Know the surgical indication
• Review the anatomy of the region where we are working
3. Meet the patient before the case whenever possible
4. You can help with paperwork – op notes, prescriptions, orders, etc.
• You are expected to round on any inpatients you have operated on
• Round in the morning before conference
• Residents round on their own time – there are no group rounds
• During resident rounds feel free to update the residents on your patients if you have new information that we do not know about
• Round on your inpatients on Saturdays before 7:00a
• You must take one call per week on plastics
• Friday and Saturday call is highly recommended
• Page the resident on call for the day on the morning you are taking call to give them your pager number
