Goal: The goal of this elective is to provide the student with the opportunity to observe common conditions that present within the trauma service.
Objectives: At the conclusion of this week, the student will be able to:
- Perform a comprehensive history and physical exam on patients that present as a trauma.
- Describe the perioperative management of trauma patients.
- Be able to manage a complex ICU patient.
- Understand initial management of a trauma patient

Course Description:
The student will follow the trauma team at St. John’s Hospital. Whether or not you are on call it is expected that you are in the hospital and available to the trauma team from 0600 to 1800. You will be expected to participate in clinic on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. And you will be expected to make a 2-3 minute presentation on Friday about a trauma topic.
Call Requirement:
Two nights of “in-house” call are required. This includes one Friday or Saturday call. Call is designated as 0600 to 0600 the next day. When you are on call Monday through Friday you need to contact the junior resident on call by paging them at 5:00pm. There is a night float resident during the week and the students on call should be with the junior night float resident at all times.
