Goal: The primary goal of the student while matriculating on Vascular Surgery is to observe common conditions that occur in patients with vascular disease, particularly those requiring surgical OR endovascular intervention.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this week the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss the presentation and management of a patient with a symptomatic high-grade stenosis of the internal carotid artery.
  2. Discuss the presentation and management of patients with an ischemic ulcer or gangrene of the foot secondary to atherosclerotic occlusive disease.
  3. Be familiar with the pathophysiology and treatment of infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Course Description:
Inpatients: The student will be assigned to the vascular surgery service during the week elective. During that time, they will be an integral part of the service and receive primary input from the vascular surgery clinical fellow. Duties will include admitting patients to the hospital with vascular disease, following their hospital course, and assisting in the operating room.

 

Clinic: The vascular service will assign the student to a particular clinic to assist in the evaluation of patients. The student will not be required to dictate clinic notes. This will be performed by the vascular attending or resident.
