I am very happy to announce that Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has received a three year accreditation for a new residency in Emergency Medicine. This is a PGY-1 through 3 residency.  We will be participating in the match this year, with our first class starting summer 2010.  Linda Schneider (lschneider@siumed.edu) is the Residency Coordinator.   I will be serving as Program Director with Christopher McDowell (cmcdowell@siumed.edu) serving as Associate Program Director.

We have capacity for 4th year elective students this year.  Sometimes students decide on Emergency Medicine relatively late and then must scramble for EM electives.  We are in a good position to accommodate these students.  Any help in getting the word out is appreciated.

This has been a community effort with tremendous support from many at SIU as well as both St. John's Hospital and Memorial Medical Center.   I would like to express my profound gratitude to the many persons responsible for the development of this program.  We will do our best to uphold the high educational standards at SIU SOM and look forward to working with many of you in this exciting endeavor.

Thank you,

David Griffen
