Springfield Information

Springfield is a classic Midwestern town of ~110,000 people  features affordable housing (94% of residents own a home), ease of commute (average <10 mins for residents), and extracurricular activities for all ages.  The state Capitol building is located only a few blocks from either hospital is constantly buzzing with activity.  Other major industries in Springfield include medicine, insurance, and tourism. Over one million individuals visit here each year for the Lincoln attractions including his home, tomb, and presidential library.  

Springfield IL signRecreational opportunities are plentiful in all season in Springfield. Lake Springfield, which is 15 minutes from the hospitals, has over 60 miles of shoreline and offers a great place for boating, fishing, and waterskiing/wakeboarding. The University of Illinois has a branch in Springfield which brings the opportunity for additional educational courses for significant others, as well as great traveling productions including orchestras, ballet companies, and off broadway plays.  One of the growing activities in Springfield is cycling, thanks to the recent conversion of old railroad tracks to bike trails.
We feel that Springfield has many things to offer its citizens. Below we have listed a few other activities/attractions that make Springfield a great town to live in while gaining a top-tier Emergency Medicine education.

Park System: Springfield has an extensive park district that manages several great parks  and bicycle trails throughout the area.  Washington Park is located in central Springfield and has a pond for fishing, a botanical garden and a 2.5 mile running course.  The Interurban and Lost Bridge Trail are two of the more popular bike trails in the region.

Affordable Golf: Springfield has 11 excellent public and private courses. The LPGA  State Farm Classic is held annually at Panther Creek. Golf Digest recently named a local course, Piper Glen Golf Club, as “#21 Best Golf Course in US for Under $50.”

Springfield Farmers Market logoSummer Farmers Market: The farmers market is located downtown and runs biweekly from May to October.  It features everything from locally grown corn to organic breads and salsa.

Springfield Sliders: This is a new prospect league team to join Springfield and is a great chance to grab a cheap seat and hear the crack of a wooden bat all summer long.

Sand volleyball, softball, indoor/outdoor soccer leagues are also available.

St. Louis is only 90 minutes away, and Chicago is 3 hours away.  Both locations are an easy direct interstate drive or a short Amtrak trip.

The Mother Road Festival

Hundreds of vehicles line the streets of Springfield's historic downtown in a display that is guaranteed to wow even the most-seasoned car enthusiast. This 3-day, free car show & street festival, celebrating the past, present & future of Route 66, also offers outdoor stages with live music, commercial vendors, kids' activities and entertainment, Route 66 celebrities and events, plus much more.
