What happens during a hearing test?

Before your appointment, spend a few moments thinking about how hearing affects your life, what challenges you are experiencing, and what would improve if you could overcome these challenges.

Bring someone with you

Most people find it helpful to bring a spouse, family member, or friend to this visit.  You will typically get more out for your visit if someone close to you can share in the experience!

The Hearing Evaluation – Audiogram

  • Hearing tests are easy – all you have to do is sit back and listen.  There are no passing or failing grades.
  • An audiogram is a key component to your hearing consultation.  It provides the audiologist information about which sounds you hear well and which sounds you may have difficulty hearing.
  • You will be tested on your ability to hear soft sounds at a variety of pitches.  You will also be tested on how well you can understand very soft speech and speech when presented at a comfortably loud level.
  • Many people are concerned that the audiogram does not reflect “real-world” situations.  We understand your concern.  Rest assured that the test procedures are well researched and provide accurate data that the audiologist can use in developing a plan personalized for you.
