COMPETENCY-BASED GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

 

Patient care

The Colorectal surgery resident will:

  • Demonstrate technical proficiency in abdominal colorectal procedures, anorectal procedures, diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy, anorectal physiology testing interpretation, and endoanal and endorectal ultrasound.
  • Demonstrate competent application of clinical and basic science knowledge by making sound pre- and intraoperative decisions, and in coping independently with unexpected intraoperative findings or events.
  • Articulate the rationale for approaches, decisions, and judgments.
  • Perform thorough and competent patient assessment, and demonstrate the ability to independently make appropriate decisions regarding treatment choices, including the need for operative intervention.
  • Provide safe and competent perioperative care, including independent timely recognition and treatment of complications of operative intervention.  

 

Medical Knowledge

The Colorectal surgery resident will:

  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of basic and clinical science as applicable to the practice of colorectal surgery, including pertinent aspects of radiology, pathology, anesthesiology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology
  • Demonstrate awareness of current literature in colorectal surgery

Interpersonal and Communication skills

The Colorectal surgery resident will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Communicate with patients and their families in a manner that is compassionate, effective, and culturally sensitive
  • Communicate bad news in a compassionate, clear manner
  • Communicate effectively with other caregivers
  • Make an effective presentation

 

Practice-based learning and Improvement

The Colorectal surgery resident will:

  • Demonstrate the ability to use information technology to research topics efficiently, and apply the gained knowledge to specific clinical situations in an evidence-based manner
  • Be able to critically evaluate medical literature
  • Facilitate learning of other residents and students in the area of colorectal surgery
  • Understand the concepts of study design and use of investigational methods
  • Demonstrate skill in self-assessment and reflection on one’s own practice

 

Professionalism

The Colorectal surgery resident will:

  • Demonstrate respect for patients, family members, and other healthcare professionals
  • Complete his/her responsibilities in a timely manner
  • Remain accountable for his/her own actions and decisions
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior toward patients, family members, and other healthcare professionals

 

Systems-based learning

The Colorectal surgery resident will:

  • Practice cost-effective patient care
  • Advocate for patients within the health care system
  • Demonstrate ability to coordinate care with other healthcare professionals and care agencies
