The Colorectal Surgery Training Program requires extensive contact with patients, families, and various professionals during diagnosis and treatment of colorectal diseases. The Colorectal Surgery Resident represents the Department of Surgery as well as the attending surgeons; accordingly, appropriate dress and conduct must be maintained.

The resident will be issued three white lab coats with his/her name embroidered upon them and an SIU School of Medicine patch on the right side. This identifies you to the patients and staff and should be worn during all patient contacts at all teaching facilities.

Appropriate dress includes business or business casual. Blue jeans should not be worn if patient contact is anticipated. Closed toe shoes with socks or hose must be worn (clogs with closed toes are acceptable). If scrubs are worn outside the operative suite, please wear your white coat over them.

Universal precautions should always be practiced if exposure to blood or body fluids is anticipated. It is advisable to keep a pair of protective goggles or glasses in your white coat.
