Colorectal Surgery Program Review. Held twice during the academic year, at the midpoint and near the end of the academic year. Attended by Program Director and Colorectal Surgery faculty, the CRS resident, and Colorectal Surgery Program support staff.  Minutes are kept. The group will review program goals and objectives and the effectiveness with which they are achieved. Based on this, changes in program structure and content are discussed and implemented as appropriate. The educational outcome of any program modifications will be evaluated at the next program review meeting.

One-on-one Mentor Program. Each quarter a member of the faculty serves as the CRS resident’s mentor, allowing the resident a more personal experience with several faculty members. This is not a clinical rotation, and the resident continues to work clinically with all faculty members. Rather, the faculty member fulfilling the mentor role will foster the resident in directed self-evaluation regarding personal strengths and weaknesses, as well as limits of knowledge and expertise. The mentor plays a role in validation of resident self-assessment and in helping the resident to select realistic and achievable performance and improvement goals. The resident works together with the mentor to identify appropriate learning activities to achieve the resident’s chosen goals.  These may be patient care based, literature review based, surgical skills lab based, systems practice based, research based, or a combination thereof.

Surgical Skills Laboratory. The Surgical Skills Lab is in Memorial Medical Center adjacent to the operative suite. While there is no set curriculum for the Colorectal Surgery resident, there are modules for the General Surgery residents which the Colorectal Surgery resident may participate in, including bowel anastomosis, both hand-sewn and stapled, with both intraabdominal and pelvic models. The lab is accessible 24/7 for individual practice on several models, including flexible sigmoidoscopy and flexible colonoscopy models.

Residents as Teachers. The General Surgery curriculum includes a Residents as Teachers course which is offered yearly. The Colorectal resident may take advantage of this opportunity to further hone skills for teaching junior residents and students.
