The Colorectal Surgery resident will be expected to complete evaluations of medical students and general surgery residents who rotate on the Colorectal Surgery Service. The forms will either arrive in your conventional department mailbox or via email from the New Innovations management system. The resident is expected to complete and submit these in a timely fashion.

The Colorectal Surgery resident is expected to evaluate the Colorectal Surgery attending surgeons and the Colorectal Surgery Program yearly. This is a requirement of the Residency Review Committee, and will help the program make adjustments to meet the residents’ needs. Since evaluations from a single resident cannot be blinded, the evaluations will not be shared with faculty until after the resident has completed the program, to allow for candidness on the part of the resident.

The Colorectal Surgery resident will be evaluated by the Colorectal Surgery attendings at two month intervals. These evaluations, which will be shared with the resident at a meeting with the Program Director, are meant to provide formative feedback to the resident. After review and discussion, it is expected that the resident will make an action plan for areas of improvement. This action plan and its results will be reviewed at the subsequent meeting with the Program Director. A summary of the action plan and its results will be placed into the resident’s file. The resident may review his/her file at any time by arrangement with the Program Director.

The Colorectal Surgery resident will also be evaluated at intervals by General Surgery residents, medical students, and nursing personnel, who will address the fields of Professionalism, Interpersonal Skills and Communication, and Systems Based Practice. These evaluations, which will also be shared with the resident at a meeting with the Program Director, are meant to provide formative feedback to the resident.
