Experience in the multidisciplinary pelvic floor program for the evaluation and management of functional and pelvic disorders is an integral part of the SIU Colorectal Surgery Residency Program. Basic physiologic investigations and tests including ultrasonography, manometry and transit studies are available at both the participating hospitals. In addition:
- Endorectal ultrasounds (3D and 2D) for benign and malignant conditions are performed and interpreted by colorectal surgeons.
- Basic anorectal manometry and pelvic floor evaluation (and biofeedback at one hospital) is performed by a trained nurse and interpreted by colorectal surgeons.
- Contrast studies such as defecography and nuclear transit studies are done through the department of radiology.
- An advanced laboratory for physiologic evaluation of pelvic floor function is available at the private outpatient clinic offices.
