The goal of this elective is to provide the student with the opportunity to observe common conditions that effect the breast, colorectal, abdomen, and endocrine that are treated in a surgical fashion as well as transplant patients.
At the conclusion of these weeks, the student will be able to:
1. Perform a comprehensive history and physical exam on patients that present with a general surgery diagnosis.
2. Describe the perioperative management of common general surgical problems.
3. Understand clinical manifestations of acute abdominal pain and principles of emergency management.

During the elective, the student will follow the team at the Hospital that they have been assigned. Students at MMC will be divided into two groups. One group will consist of only one student and will follow Springfield Clinic surgeons. The second group will follow the SIU general surgeons.
Call Requirement: One night each week of in-house call. Every student must take Friday or Saturday and one weekday call. The hours of call are from 0600 to 0600 of the next day. Students must participate in morning rounds with residents prior to leaving.

During the elective, the student will follow the colorectal team. The student will participate in colorectal clinics as well as colorectal surgeries and colonoscopy procedures.
