Brief Biography

Dr. Edward Alfrey is Professor and Chairman of the Division of Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.  He is fellowship trained in liver, pancreas, and kidney transplantation.  His practice includes general surgery and he has a special interest in hepatobiliary surgery, particularly regarding tumors of the liver and complex biliary reconstruction.  He also specializes in kidney/pancreas transplantation.

Prior to joining SIU, Dr. Alfrey was at the Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.  He is certified by the American Board of Surgery.  His professional affiliations include the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Transplantation, the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, and American Association of Immunologists. 

Dr. Alfrey earned his bachelor’s from the University of Denver and his medical degree from the University of Colorado.  He received his residency training from the University of Arizona in Tucson and served a fellowship in transplantation at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He recently completed a master’s degree in Health Care Management from Harvard University in Boston.
