Dr. Hilary A. Sanfey, Professor of Surgery and Vice Chair for Educational Affairs, specializes in kidney/pancreas transplantation. She received both her undergraduate and medical training from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. She underwent her surgical training at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Guys Hospital in London. She completed a fellowship in solid organ transplantation at the University of Virginia in 1997. She is currently enrolled in a Master in Health Professions Education course at the University of Chicago, expecting to complete it this year.
Prior to joining SIU, Dr. Sanfey was professor of surgery with the University of Virginia Health System. She was Associate Program Director in Surgery and the Surgery Clerkship Co-Director.
Dr. Sanfey is a member of several medical societies, including Alpha Omega Alpha, the Association of Women Surgeons, American Association of Transplant Surgeons and Association for Surgical Education. She is a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons. Her research interests include resident learning styles, the impact of resident teachers on medical student learning and leadership development.
