Dr. John P. Sutyak is Associate Director for the Southern Illinois Trauma Center. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and completed a research fellowship in immunology at Brigham and Womens Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Prior to joining SIU, Dr. Sutyak was a faculty member of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery with added qualifications in surgical critical care. He also has certification as an instructor for Advanced Trauma Life Support from the American College of Surgeons. In addition, Dr. Sutyak is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and serves on the post-graduate course faculty for the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of several other national organizations, including the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Association of Academic Surgeons, the Association for Surgical Education the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and the Association of General Surgeons.
Dr. Sutyak has interests in trauma/critical care, minimally invasive surgical techniques and medical education. He has published numerous journal articles, educational materials and books chapters.
