General / Laparoscopic Surgery

The SIU General Surgery offers not only subspecialty care by fellowship trained individuals in the areas of trauma and critical care, transplantation, colon and rectal surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, surgery of the breast, and surgical oncology, but also provides the region with advanced surgical support for many common general surgical issues.  Included in this category would be the care of abdominal hernias, and acute care surgery for emergent and urgent surgical conditions such as appendicitis, cholecystitis, and gastrointestinal obstructions or perforations, as well as surgical management of benign and malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary systems.

All division faculty include minimally invasive and laparoscopic strategies in their approach to surgical disease management where appropriate to the pathology.  The faculty also collectively offer skills in advanced and therapeutic endoscopy of the gastrointestinal tract, further supporting minimally invasive strategies in managing diseases of the esophagus, stomach, intestine, pancreas, biliary system, colon, and rectum.

The division faculty represent the only general surgical group in the region in which all providers are both board certified in general surgery, and have completed advanced fellowships in other surgical subspecialty areas.
